ISO 9000? Big deal! Note: For those who don’t know what ISO 9000 is, the most common oversimplification is to say it’s an international standard for producing and delivering "quality" products and services. "Quality" being defined not by luxury or attentiveness or refinement, but in terms of what the customer expects, when they expect it, and how much they expect to pay.
Achieving "quality" by making sure every aspect of your company that impacts its ability to deliver on those promises knows what to do before the need arises, does what it’s supposed to do, and can prove it. Every aspect. From design to delivery, packaging to maintenance, storage to order processing.
Companies who become "registered" as meeting ISO 9000 standards (usually one of the specific sub-sets such as 9001, 9002, or 9003) has implied meaning to those who know or care what it means. Even though it’s a bigger deal in Europe and in large manufacturing and defense circles than elsewhere in the US, a healthy ROI is why many companies invest in the effort to become "registered."
In order to become registered, a company must prove it knows what it’s doing on a regular basis by submitting to audits by professional ISO 9000 auditors. Becoming and staying registered is no trivial matter. Though it is possible to "fool" the auditors, I never understood why companies found it better to throw a lot of effort into duping the auditors rather than just doing what they say they’re supposed to be doing... but I digress.
