FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: December 4, 2006
CONTACT:Entinex
12/04/06, BALTIMORE. Entinex, Inc., a provider of process improvement consulting for software development and systems engineering firms, said that the Software Engineering Institute, a research arm of Carnegie Mellon University, has authorized Entinex' Principal and CEO, Hillel Glazer, as a "SCAMPI Lead Appraiser", "SCAMPI B&C Team Leader", and "Introduction to CMMI Instructor". This combination of authorizations has been granted to fewer than 300 people worldwide.
CMMI is a model for process improvement and is a pre-requisite to competing for many Federal software contracts. Glazer noted that the new credentials gave rise to the shift in market focus to address the widening gap between the number of smaller companies needing to implement CMMI and the number of experts specifically qualified to help smaller companies do so. He adds, "CMMI consulting has always been a line of business for Entinex, but these new credentials put us on a very short list for a very in-demand service. Not taking advantage of this opportunity would be foolish."
Consistent with this shift, the company has already sponsored a blog (www.agilecmmi.com) and an FAQ (www.CMMIFAQ.info) to help people understand the CMMI and how it can be implemented cost-effectively for smaller organizations, and/or those using Agile development methods. Glazer has also taken to the road with this topic already having speaking engagements at international conferences. "Part of the challenges I'm seeing over and over are companies who don't know what they don't know and are trying to implement CMMI in ways that are fundamentally inappropriate for organizations of their size. The failure rate is really tragic -- it costs companies tens or hundreds of thousands of dollars to implement CMMI -- only to find out they've done it incorrectly and fail to achieve their goals."
The company's value-proposition is made possible by taking an engineering rather than an auditing approach to process implementation. This allows its focus on smaller organizations, and those using Agile development methods to succeed. "Like any engineered product, processes need requirements, architecture, design, and a planned execution", says Entinex' CEO, "too many of our clients become our clients after someone else's failure to take this sort of [an] approach."
Glazer plans to systematize his company's approach to CMMI implementation and is partnering with other like-minded companies to help create momentum behind the idea that CMMI can be implemented for companies of all sizes, compositions, and development approaches. Glazer hints that there are also projects in the works to marry CMMI practices to software project management tools to provide a much more turn-key approach that many smaller organizations are seeking. He could not specify which tools or how they'd be used.
Process improvement for software companies is important whether or not a company is in the Federal space. In very basic terms, Glazer explains, process improvement provides transparency into what's taking time, costing money and affecting product quality. Getting a handle on these things will make a company's performance more predictable and their outcomes more consistent. It's true for any business. For software companies, it seems to have only recently come to light and CMMI is the flashlight.
