As difficult as it is to buy the right software, you’d think they’d call it hardware. You need to be an expert in how to buy software. You need to know how to write a software specification. For every business there are many problems or needs that can be addressed. Technology will only be able to solve certain problems. For every one of those there are many technologies that will work. For every technology there are many more products or solutions of that technology. And, for every product or solution there are that many more vendors. How do you know if the vendor you picked is even going to have a product, a technology or a solution that can solve your problem and that it's the right problem to solve with technology? First you need to figure out which business problems need to be solved. Then you need to narrow down which of those business problems can be solved with technology. After that you need to determine which technologies are the right ones to apply to solve those problems. Only then can you identify the technology product or solution to address those needs. Don't even think about talking to a developer or vendor until you've done these steps. CMMI can be applied to small companies and in agile development environments and methods. You can achieve a CMMI level rating even though you use XP (Extreme Programming) or another Agile Development approach or method.Looking for help implementing CMMI? Need someone who will understand that 'your're different?' Looking for discipline in a lightweight environment? Entinex understands and can help you achieve your process objectives.Software development isn't manufacturing. So why do people keep trying to use manufacturing methods on software? Manufacturing QA doesn't work in software which is why so much software QA is so painful. Entinex has the solution. Don't let obsolete thinking about software processes intimidate you out of pursuing a CMMI level rating. Old-style thinking about software processes have not kept up with the times, but Entinex has. Entinex understands that you're in business not for the process but to make money selling software products, solutions, and services. Let Entinex help you achieve your process goals without breaking your bank or rhythm.

  • What is this list about?

This is a discussion list for businesses, by businesses, to businesses.
This list is for you if you fall into one of these two groups:

  • Technology is the way your business makes money by creating, developing, and selling it (or would if you could make more money doing so).
  • Technology is the way your business stays productive and efficient (or would if you could get it to do so).
  • Together we'll try to answer the following questions:

    For everyone:
  • What is the role of technology in your business?
  • For technology consumers:
  • Is technology in the right places and doing the right things?
  • Are you effectively using technology in your business?
  • Do you want to implement technology in your business but don't know where to start, or what you need?
  • How do you articulate your what your business needs to technology vendors so you the most value and use from technology?
  • For technology product developers and service providers:
  • Could you use some help being more profitable?
  • Could you use some help meeting customer needs?
  • Would you like to sound out some ideas and see whether they fly?
  • How can you best attract, hire, retain, and motivate technology workers?
  • All of these questions (and more) are the kinds of questions we seek to explore on this discussion list.  Entinex, Inc. The Technology Strategy Company, is proud to moderate this list so that everyone can benefit from our collective know-how and experiences.

    What is Technology Strategy?

A Technology Strategy is how each company defines the role technology plays within their company.  It can often be that part of their business plan that talks about how technology will support the business.  Technology does play a role in every company.  However, the complexity of that role determines whether a Technology Strategy is needed.

If the technology of a business amounts to a cash register, fax machine, and phone line, then a business can probably do well without a Technology Strategy.  But even then, when such a company decides that it is time for them to start using technology as a part of how they get business done and make money, then a Technology Strategy approach is how they figure out:

  • What Technology Will Do
  • How they will Use Technology
  • How they will Support Technology
  • How Much Technology they Need
  • What's the Right Technology for them
  • Is their Business Ready for Technology?
  • Are the Business' Current Processes Working?
  • ... And several other considerations.
  • Entinex has a paper called "10 Critical Business Decisions for Every Technology Project" on its Publications page that addresses these and other business decisions.

A Technology Strategy is also important for companies in the business of making and selling technology products or services.  These types of companies need to formalize how it is, exactly, that they are going to run their business so that they can make money and manage the operations of the business.  Just like a pizza shop knows how they make pizzas so that every mushroom and onion pizza not only comes out the same, but uses the same amount of ingredients, takes the same amount of time to make, and costs the shop the same amount of money to make and deliver, a technology company needs to be able to predict and work from the knowledge of whether or not they can/will make money on every technology project.  Technology developers and service providers need a Technology Strategy to help them figure out:

  • How to Get their Estimates to Match their Actuals
  • What Are the Right Things to Do?
  • Are they Doing the Right Things?
  • Are they Doing the Right Things at the Right Time?
  • Do they Have a Way to Correct for Either When the Right Things Aren't Being Done, or Aren't Being Done at the Right Time?
  • Is there a Connection Between What they Sell and What they Can Make?
  • How Do they Handle Customer Service, or Requests for New Products or Features?
  • ... And many other things that take place within a technology company, but often don't get formalized.

Do I need a Technology Strategy?

Only if technology plays a serious role in your business as a means of being in business or as the means of being a business... or if you are thinking of implementing technology for the first time, or finally implementing technology the way you've always meant to once and for all.

Did you know that your technology project has an 80% chance of failing? Do you know what to do to improve those odds? Do you know what to ask your software developer or vendor to make sure they know what to do so that the project you're paying them to do doesn't fail?
Would you like your software estimates to improve? Would you like to have predictability and consistency in your software projects? Wouldn't it be nice if you could forecast your capacity for new work and your sales effort? Wouldn't better estimats result in happier clients?
